Teen Summit & “It’s Ok Not To Be Ok” Campaign.

WHAT

As apart of Mental Health Week, Bermuda Mental Health Foundation will host teens from every High School in Bermuda for its first Teen Summit event on October 12, 2018 located at Cedarbridge Academy from 12:30pm to 3:30pm.

This year’s Mental Health Week topic is “Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World”. Teens will be invited to host, discuss and identify solution to a number of problems plaguing Bermuda’s youth. Topics will include drugs and alcohol, violence, stigma surrounding mental health among the youth, resources available in Bermuda, suicide and suicide prevention and so much more.

As an added benefit, Newton County High School students based in Covington, GA will join in the event virtually and contribute to the conversation. Roughly 80 Bermudian students and 30 Georgia students will participate in the Teen Summit event and students will host, be the panelist, make up the audience and come up with solutions during the live recording.

STUDENTS INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING SHOULD SPEAK WITH THEIR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS.

In addition to the Teen Summit event, the Foundation will also launch its “It’s Ok Not to Be Ok” T-shirt campaign. The “It’s Ok Not to Be Ok” campaign is an awareness campaign that encourages those in the community to seek help if they or someone they know are suffering from a mental illness. The campaign will be organized in two parts:

Part 1: T-shirt purchasing and campaign awareness
Part 2: Unofficial “It’s Ok Not to Be OK” Day will take place on October 12, 2018. Those who purchase the T-shirts will be encouraged to wear their shirts on the 12th of October. Throughout the day there will be an open virtual dialog about the importance of getting help, because although its ok not to be ok, it’s not ok to not get help.

WHEN

T-shirt sales will start August 15, 2018 and the deadline is September 15, 2018. National “It’s OK Not to Be OK” Day will be on October 12, 2018. This will be the day everyone should wear their T-shirt. Cost: $20.00

Stigma surrounding Mental Illness continues to be a barrier for those who want to get help. BHMF would like to highlight the fact that everyone at some point requires some form of assistance no matter their social economic status, race or age. We all require mental health support and that it is OK not to be OK, but it’s not OK to not get the help you need. BHMF would also like to highlight the available resources within the community such as natural support systems, counseling agencies, Mid-Atlantic Wellness Institute, support groups and others.
